We're inducing diabetes in SD rats using high fat diet (from age 3 weeks to 7 weeks) and dose of STZ (at age week 5). We would be recording their blood glucose level using a glucometer before and one week after the STZ injection.
I was wondering what are the minimum values for fasting blood glucose, and non-fasting blood glucose?
Additional, does anyone has insight into whether fasting or non-fasting blood glucose measurement is better than the other, or why you'd use one over the other?
We're only using the blood-glucose values for comparison between our obese and diabetic group, and to see if our diabetic rats actually meet the diabetic criteria.

In my experiences as well as several documents, fasting blood glucose concentrations of diabetic animals (diabetic model) divided into two medium or severe conditions. FBS above 250-300 mg/dL considering as medium while FBS more than 350 mg/dL categorizing as severe diabetic animal model. According to my experiences, the Rats/Mice with FBS 200-250 mg/dL spontaneously recovered!
Fasting condition is very important to diabetes induction and FBS assessment. 14-18 h fasting is suitable before diabetes induction but, 8 h fasting recommended for FBS assessment. Fasting duration 14-18 h can be falsely show lower FBS in diabetic animals.

However, diabetic rats with fasting blood glucose of 230-250 mg/dL may not necessarily recover.
I will suggest that you do not consider rats with fasting blood glucose less than 230 mg/dL as diabetic.

According to my experiments and observations, fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels in STZ-induced diabetic SD rats are about 250-350 mg/dl.
