I've using Word since so many years, but new to LaTeX, and starting seems difficult as there are a lot of commands. Is LaTeX is really better than word?

I was a lifetime Word user to know LaTeX, codes initially overwhelm us, but then, the suit is much better than Word, much more stable, more versatile, not confict with other programs, and the best ... the presentation is much better than the word, and the best is free ... 100% recommend LaTex

In LaTeX, what exactly are packages, there are so many and I am confused, like what to use in different scenarios.

@Justin Kitzes - I want to share my résumé that I made using LaTeX, I started by using a template. I do not know how to add page numbers, I'm lost in vertical spacing, I have to specify it differently, e.g.. after every publication i have to add space, but everytime the value it needs is different. I've shared class file and source file also. Please if you can help a little bit.

You have to modify three lines in cls file:
793: \pagestyle{plain}
813: \pagenumbering{arabic}
822: \textheight 270mm

in the preamble.
And this code after line: \begin{resume}

\pagestyle{plain}
I've used 4 instead of automatic number of pages, so be carefully, or look on the Internet how to fix.
In my opinion you've chosen too hard template to work with it, try to start with simpler documents ;)

I tries both of these but the problem is I am not able to adjust footer in exact center of page.
moreover @Salvat, lastpage is not working, I'm getting "??" instead of last page.
I've tried one more cv template, please review that if I've adjusted correctly. In research projects I had to manually add table and have to manually adjust the width.
