We generally map the value chain actors and activities across the value chain from farm to fork. Sometimes from production to consumption, all the role of actors as well as their share in the consumer's rupee, are calculated to find out the efficiency of the value chain.
Value chain analysis actually some sort of descriptive type analysis, which means one has to calculate the difference of the monetary unit between two stages of a products or services.
Which value chain yields more output can easily be identified by justifying the first and last participants selling and purchase price respectively. Individual actor's performance also can be measured.

On the subject of the value chain you hear a lot of noise. An approach that may be promising but needs a lot of solidarity is that associated with the analysis of competitiveness à la Porter. All the economic agents of the cluster of a product participate in this and all commit to work for the cluster as a whole. When I was young, say about 35 years ago, there was an expanded agriculture approach known as "agribussines", which was nothing more than the most detailed input-output approach in its connections. There were computer programs to do the analyzes and the whole thing. I remember that the Brazilians published a book on this approach. These approaches have different applications. The first should be used by the cluster members and the second is more for public policy.
