Methodology for HPLC analysis of plant compounds in soil?

Can anyone share any tips on their experience with HPLC and measuring compounds in soil (either naturally present or secreted by plant roots)? For example with phenolic acids

Mobile/Stationary phase solvents
Isocratic vs. Gradient type
Compound retention in soil over time. Any dilution effects due to watering?
How much soil sample is appropriate?
