I have methanol that exceeds the carbonyl content according to ACS specifications. ACS carbonyl test uses formaldehyde, acetone and acetaldehyde as standards, so I have at least one of this impurities.
Simple distillation did not work, so I remembered that 2,4-DNPH precipitate these carbonyls for qualitative tests.
My principal question is if simply adding 2,4-DNPH in approximated stoichiometric amount will precipitate the carbonyl impurities, Did I forget any details? I think that after this treatment, simple distillation of the mixture will give a better product.
I appreciate your comments in advance. Best regards.
