Mechanism of action of a2-3 or a2-6 sialic acid the receptor of influenza virus HA protein

It is well known than a2-3 or a2-6 sialic acid is the receptor of influenza virus HA protein. However, the mechnism between the interaction of a2-3 or a2-6 sialic acid and influenza virus HA protein is still not very clear. Do the sialic acid on the immuno cell give us some help to protect the influenza virus or can be used by the influenza virus to infect more target?
