2D hetero-structures are finding numerous applications in energy storage, flexible electronics and nano-composites. But there has not been much experimental work in investigating the mechanical properties (elastic modulus, shear modulus, inter-layer friction etc.). Let us discuss what has been done in this field. Just to trying to keep ourself busy with some fundamental scientific discussions while we are locked down in our homes.

Dear Maharshi Dey , thanks for sharing the paper. I came across it a little while ago. Single layer indentation has been widely studied. Specially for MXene and other 2D materials. One key reason for that is, you don't have to worry about the interlayer interaction. The problems arise with bi-layer/hetersostructures. The studies (even the one you shared) consider that the layers are interlocked and there's no/minimal slippage or sliding. Which in my opinion is not true. Atomically thin materials are extremely smooth and there has to be some sliding. This is what I am more interested in. To find out the interlayer interaction. For example, if you have a gr/hBN het. structure, considering there's no/minimal slippage, the total Young's modulus should be the addition of both gr and hBN. Surprisingly, that's not the case. So there has to be something in between layers that is not reported yet. Please let me know of any work addressing this issue.

Even if you have bi-layer, in my opinion, there will be slip and sliding. That's what I understood from these papers.
