In certain places or countries, there are some teachers whose research is not funded.  On RG, I found friends from other countries in this position that I'm in.  We still so our research, because we happen to be more intrinsically motivated, and we do not look so much on external motivation like rewards anymore.  However, it's true that for most people, motivation is both intrinsic and extrinsic.  For the more extrinsically motivated, all the factors you mentioned are great enough to cause motivation to dwindle!  Can you blame them for being less successful or concerned about teaching?

 Motivation and enthusiasm manifest as desire and interest, and act as a driving force that pushes anybody to take action and pursue goals. Motivation definitely affects performance in any field and teaching is not an exception. Lack of motivation can show up everywhere, at home, at work, in relationships, in pursuing goals and in everything else. This often, creates indifference, unhappiness, dissatisfaction and lead to failure in life and career. If a teacher or university instructors lack in motivation,  how he/she can motivate students and impart quality education of high standard. Studies have indicated that higher teacher motivation is significantly linked to improved student learning outcomes.

We live in a world where double standards are implemented widely. There are universities which are allowed to progress and there are universities which are doomed to lag behind. If someone thinks that universities are not under the control of "politics", then this person does not know what is actually going on.

When the second type is targeted for failure, then the top managerial posts will go to those who will participate in the process of de-activation. In such "miserable" case, you will see all sorts of negativities: no motivation, no rewards, and no support. Of course, there will be exceptions & some persons will be allowed to "move up" so as they become seemingly natural "successors" for the existing managers to continue the "mission" of degradation. I have never bought the "propaganda goods" because at my old age & my humble experience, I can judge the good from the bad universities.

Yes, once there is lack of motivation seldom the fruits of such an activity will be good for something. Unless the worker thinks of his contribution as a mission, but then there is motivation again there. Not from the job, but from his beliefs.

Dear All and Dr. Mohammad Hamad Al-khresheh,  Yes they need to be motivated. Atmosphere at the universities as a whole should be improved including the students. Whenever this motivating exercise has been done at my old institution (Central Soil Salinity Research, Institute, Karnal, India) in the form of visit a lab in abroad, present a paer in International Conferences in other countries, participation in short training programs, promotion in job, help in getting funding for research projects always boost the output of the scientists. This topic of discussion is a matter of great concern. Lack of motivation leads to dissatisfaction and lost productivity. I have recently read an article about this topic. The article reveals that "48% of employees worldwide don’t even like their jobs, more than 80% of US workers feel stressed at the office, and only 30% feel “engaged and inspired” by their careers. particularly troubling for leaders and business owners, 18% are actively disengaged – that is, present at work but hating every minute of it." Micromanagement, lack of progress, job insecurity and no confidence in company leadership can be considered in order to understand our own job dissatisfaction,

In-service training, opportunities for continuing professional development are also crucial to teachers’ ongoing learning and motivation, and should be integrated into and promoted by in-service training institutions. Professional development can include:

• study opportunities
• regular and supportive line management meetings and appraisals
• support, evaluation and assessment from in-service advisers and inspectors school exchanges
• peer consultation and experience sharing in subject themed, district or provincial level groups

In some countries, the costs of professional development through further study, for example, have to be borne by teachers – even where such study is required for them to reach the minimum qualification standards officially required to teach. When salaries are as low as they are, it is clear that the financial costs of further study – especially but not only when it is related to meeting minimum qualification standards – should be borne by the government and not by teachers themselves

Many thanks for enriching this question with your interesting comments. Employee motivation has constantly been a fundamental problem for managers and leaders. It is obvious that employees who feel motivated to work are likely to be inspired, productive and persistent, turning out high quality work that they enthusiastically undertake. On the other hand, those who are unmotivated are likely to spend little or no effort in their jobs, avoid their workplace, produce low quality work.

A professional who works without team spirit, without proper reward, with no intelectual production or research projects and still with financial problems should not be called a teacher anymore, but a learner whose main goal is to learn how to survive before the official notice of the end comes. A teacher is mainly an artist, the owner of the world in his teaching space. A professional who needs to be motivated at all times. It is true that it can be a teacher whose motivation is not those ones that any teacher would need. Say, he may need to carry on a project which was a non realized dream of a relative or friend. Other than that we would seldom have a true teaching in such a setting.

The key focus of teachers is students and for students, it is teachers. Teachers often found to complain that students are not interested. On the other hand students are seen to complain that teachers are not interested in teaching. What a teacher does in the classroom reflects his/her course of action and student success. Teachers should be concerned with teaching basic skills, decency, critical thinking and motivating students to think for themselves. If teachers can't do this in their context, they should evaluate themselves and their teaching mode. In this situate, the teacher need motivation to make his/her teaching learners’-friendly.

Motivated teachers can significantly think about how learning can happen in different ways and experiment with different techniques and approaches. Motivated teachers are interested in what they do: they look at teaching in a different way to teachers who are not motivated.
