I have not that much previous experience with residual stresses and phase transformations.

As I have previously understood, residual stresses due to plastic deformation in austenite are reduced during martensitic transformation. The transformation itself will however cause some stresses.

Recently, I have seen indications that martensite could inherit residual stresses from plstically deformed austenite.

Is this possible?

I cannot see any clear evidence of plastic deformation of the martensite, but the hardness values indicates that the martensite must be deformed.

Best Regards

Erik
