just a query about recommendations for a cheap (or free) mapping program for plotting distributions of marine invertebrates (tanaids in my case). I have PANMAP but this is very basic and I'd like to have more colour and "wow factor". I'm isolated, not part of an institution, so can't easily tap into other people's experience of using a particular program - and certainly not command-line driven. Any pointers gratefully received. I believe that QGIS ( https://www.qgis.org/en/site/ ) could be a great option. This is a geospatial software where you can choose different colours or shapes for your spatial information. QGIS is free and you have many editing options and online information about the processes.

I do agree, QGIS is fantastic! I am using this program for years, and it meets all requirements.
I also recommend QGIS. It is an excellent tool for mapping species distribution data.

Depending on the file types that you will be working on and your intended outputs I would suggest you make use of QGIS. Simple and straightforward, excellent for quick mapping applications for the novice and expert user.

I would try the Whitebox. It is very similar to ArcMap and user friendly and very stable in Windows and Mac.... It is also JAVA based.
