I would be interested in any ideas, suggestions, information, theoretical and bibliographical references etc., on how mass communication /mass media can be used in social work or for purposes related to social work. Thank you!
Dear Simona Rodat, I am not at all concerned by this interesting area, however I followed one course during my academic study, so I want to contribute by the following links, and I hope they will be usefull. My Regards
It depends upon how u are going to use the mass media. for e.g like whether it is for research purpose, surveys, any awareness campaigns/activities or social marketing etc.
Hi Simona! Your question got me thinking. Are you really concerned with the connections between social work and the mass media of public communication?
I have the impression that social workers in numerous fields of practice are confronted with increasing demands and growing challenges. This massive trend is structurally related to the digital transformation. Both institutionally and personally, everyday work with core clients is changing, in some cases massively, in digital living environments. This affects all traditional and new target and stakeholder groups of the socio-educational processions.
Increasingly, (prospective) colleagues are reaching their limits in these contexts. The necessity and the need for a goal-oriented, sustainable education and training of social workers and social pedagogues in the field of relevant professional and practice-related media competencies is growing everywhere. The need to sensitize and qualify students and experienced professionals for these urgent tasks is correspondingly great.
In fact, this is where I see the greatest need for action with regard to research, training and continuing education.
Indeed, I am concerned with the connections between social work and the mass communication, in all forms relevant to the social work - e.g., using media to make known social policies and services, or to popularize and make understood targeted and means-tested programmes, using public communication through public campaigns to draw attention to important themes for social work, such as social inequality, social exclusion, discrimination, poverty etc., and not least, how to integrate digital (social) media into work of social workers. I think all this should/could be concerns for the specialists in the field of social work (and all those who have a connection with the field), hence my question.

Social workers can use social media to keep in touch with service users, not just with other professionals. Many debates continue about the impact of social media on the confidentiality of service users, and how information shared publicly on social media should be used by social workers. Social media is not as safe an environment to express frustrations as social occasions with colleagues, but they also can help to create a community of professionals, eventually breaking down traditional barriers and enabling better communication. All this has to be managed very carefully and in a wise manner.
