My lab group is in the process of writing up a series of manuscripts that we intend to submit to scientific journals.  This entails many different studies asking different questions but using the same set of study streams and a unified sampling procedure.

I am considering writing up a description of our methods and posting it on the eCommons at my university, then citing it in our papers.  I would not eliminate the regular methods section in each paper, but instead would have a citation to an online document with a richer discussion of what we did.

Does this seem like a good idea?  Would it be better to try and get this document into one of the peer reviewed articles as a supplement?  One thing I worry about is having it stuck behind a pay wall.

Thoughts?
