I agree. I cannot prove it with data, but it is my personal impression is that interaction with English language applications improves people's proficiency in English. I also think that people have an advantage in countries where movies are shown in English with subtitles of the country's language rather than having the movies dubbed.

Learning a language by using it for real life purposes enjoys a rich literature. In his suggestion of four strands, professor Nation(2010) emphasizes what he calls meaning-focused output . Accordingly, the time- on -task becomes important and the learners should spend a considerable amount of time on L2 use. As you have rightly observed, exposure to L2 input through phones, internet, and other related social media can help learners scaffold  and subsume foreign language words and structures meaningfully.

You are right. This kind of interaction by using language directly promote for meaning-focused output and that what our learners really in need.  Traditional ways of teaching make students stick to classroom language which makes them in turn poor communicators outside. 

I think learning English for general communication and dealing with people in daily life can be acquired by the social media, movies, songs, etc. However, to be a professional in English for using in technical/scientific writing and editing as well as the different research stages, such approaches may not be sufficient. Reading and criticizing more reports whatever their types in my opinion is the best approach to achieve that.

I agree with one of the earlier comments that the current trend is to favor fluency over accuracy. Using English in social media is a good way to increase exposure to and get practice in written English, but the downside is that one can be misled by the mistakes of others while reinforcing one's own mistakes. But on the principle that any practice is better than none at all, on the whole we shouldn't discourage this kind of casual use.

I think that using the language is one of the most necessary and effective factors to learn the language. In the Web article "Learning a language – The 10 most effective learning strategies" (see the link below), the author writes the following strategies:

1. Have a clear motivation

2. Immerse yourself

3. Listen frequently

4. Learn vocabulary in a smart way

5. Think in the foreign language

6. Use spaced repetition to build up vocabulary

7. Learn words and phrases

8. Make many mistakes

9. Read and write as much as you can in the foreign language

10. Do short but regular learning sessions.

Among these strategies, 2, 3, 5, and 9 are all related to using the language.

Of course, you can learn a language by using it, and the Internet and new technologies provide multiple means of doing so. However, a focus on form is a useful complement to acquisition through regular use, as it can help learners to move more quickly through stages of their interlanguage and reduce error fossilization. There is now quite a strong body of evidence to support the idea that a focus on form is beneficial. A useful starting point is "Focus on Form in Classroom Second Language Acquisition" , edited by Doughty and Williams.
