Laser welding of cast PMMA?

I'm wondering what is behind the impossibility to laser weld together cast acrylics, while extruded grades weld easily. Is this caused by the difference in molecular weight (it is higher for cast PMMA, than for extruded)? Does absorption in IR depend on the molecular weight?

The molecular weight would influence viscosity of the melt and glass transition temperature.
