I teach a technical/professional writing course for FYC students at a community college. Students represent a diverse set of disciplines; the course focuses on written work as the main source of assessment and requires a final research project.
I don't have much technical/professional experience. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced writing within an MBA program or other advanced program (a program that isn't already centered on writing - like a writing teacher would experience [irony?]). How do they discuss writing and, specifically, style? What are some common writing assignments or writing scenarios that instructors use to evaluate students?
Do you think there is a way to provide this course with a content that shows how writing is used in diverse and non-academic ways?
They encourage all to write as much and often as possible after studying written work of the best published authors in their field of interest.
Why are you interested in use of writing in non-academic ways? As specified in your last line.
By non-academic, I mean simply less like an essay. They may write proposals, press releases, blog posts ect. People outside of the academy research and write all the time; I guess I want to include some of these scenarios to complement the more academic writing experiences.
