I'm currently collecting a series of interesting papers to suggest my (master level computer science and computing engineering) students of the "Software Engineering and Programming Systems seminar" to read. They need to read the paper in depth and then present it in class as if it was their own paper. Any suggestions for key papers in this domain to suggest? (I want to avoid bias by proposing only my own suggestions.) Only published papers, accessible to master-level students, with good citations, if possible.

Would you mind to elaborate "Programming Systems"? The whole of programming languages, compilers, IDEs, build systems, continuous integration? Or more about IntensiVE-alike tools?

With respect to "programming languages and paradigms": We conducted a seminar using
Cristina Videira Lopes's book "Exercises in Programming Style" (http://tagide.com/blog/academia/exercises-in-programming-style/) as a backbone. It provides a very broad overview on programming paradigms with some references to the corresponding languages. The paper she lists are mainly the classical ones (E.g. for monads: "How to declare an imperative" by Phil Wadler). The students liked the seminar. I liked the book and the seminar very much. Since Barbara Kitchenham published here guides to Systematic Literature Reviews, there is almost an explosion on SLRs on anything Software Engineering. This might be a starting point as well. There is the "Systematic literature reviews in software engineering - A systematic literature review." and "Systematic literature reviews in software engineering-A tertiary study. " from her an co-authors from 2009 and 2010.
