hello, please I need to begin a work on the perspective of Karl Marx on social class and health inequalities. however I need ideas and useful articles cos I am confused of how to link this theory to health practice and inequalities.
I'll be happy to accept you in Russia. For sure it is the best place - to fish for answers to all the problems you mentioned in relation wth K. Marx & Co.
thanks a lot Napoleon, your short write up provided me with all I wanted and am glad to say I can now link it properly.
the proletariat being the subordinated class, worked hard on daily basis and yet they remain poor, this condition predisposes them to unhealthy behaviours such as smoking, alcoholism and drug abuse.
they are being paid less and can thus not afford proper diet resulting in nutritional deficiencies as well as obesity. they can barely live in good houses and thus are exposed to biological hazards to health, the present government even disburses lesser medical facilities to such slum areas thus people in this class cannot have access to proper medical treatment, which is termed "symbolic violence" by Pierre Bourdieu. (1930).
in places like Africa for instance anti-malaria and anti-biotic resistance is the order of the day because people from low social economic class cannot afford to go to the hospital, hence they practice self prescription and purchase drugs from cheap medicine shops.
the US, on the other hand practice private health care and while the bourgeoisie class as proposed by Marx, are able to afford proper health care, the proletariat suffer and die in illness. even though the united kingdom claims to reduce inequalities by the provision of the free NHS, there is still issue of discrimination of the marginalized group as every research still reveals that the poorest health is among those from the lower class.
hello George, I buy your idea as well which could make my write up a bit critical because even if Karl Marx opened our eyes to the problems inequalities, his proposed method of tackling it which is resolution has completely failed therefore It could be suitable to say that class division is something that will always exist (Pierre Bourdieu, 1930) and even if Durkheim suggested that fuctionalism is essential because the role play (Goffman) of all strata of social class is beneficial, the todays world government should put into considerations the wider socio-economic determinants of health and make health care services affordable, accessible and available
Try a web search using the term 'critical theory health inequalities' and you should get some useful hits. For example, here is one article that came up on the first page:
Estimada Chidinma.
