If Kaluza and Klein by considering 5-dimensional space in relativity had Maxwell's equations drop out was there an attempt, then to say G and Coulomb's equation must drop out or be related somehow? Were there thoughts that the fundamental constants could be explained?

Was there a thought that somehow linkage of these forces would somehow explain why one force (gravity) is so weak versus electromagnetic. Is there a 'classical' quantum mechanical experiment that is better explained by the inclusion of gravity?
