I have a small project on electrical stimulation in biomedical engineering. And I would like some suggestions regarding a topic that I can do a FEM modelling on.
Try and model signal propagation down the length of a healthy neuron and one that has had its myelin compromised by a neurondegenerative disease. The conduction properties of the neuron are somewhat simple to model mathematically so they are amendable to COMSOL.
For example the capacitance is related to the thickness of the myelin which is less in someone with such a disease. You could draw a simplified version of a neuron, apply the boundary conditions for the initiation of the signal, and model the propagation of the signal.
Might I suggest only between two node of ranviers only because of how the signal is initialized by ion channels at these point and it may not be possible to tell get COMSOL to handle thresholding and action potentials properly.
Yes you can make applications with the method of finite elements with a tool like the COMSOL Multi-physics. The new version is equipped by behavioral tools or it there's the physical aspect also it there's the electrical part.
Keshava Ragavendra, I personally work with transcorneal electrical stimulation , an area of interest is the form of the electromagnetic field around a Ganzfeld contact lens, if you're interested contact me: [email protected]
