Asking and answering, global in open horizon , refreshes mind activity and works against alzheimer by old scientists .

It opens new ways of thinking , that enable scientists see thier problems they are working on from different faces and corners ! That simples the clear view !

But which bases and mechanism could be used for evaluation ???

I'm with Pierlorenzo. These non-scientific questions can also be interesting, not to mention the answers people give. Anything well reasoned is a pleasure to read. So I don't mind at all giving them a look. Especially when there's nothing in the technical questions that I feel I can contribute to, or that I can contribute to without investing more time than I have at the moment.

I think the non-scientific questions should not be asked here. However, many people does it to get impact in their profiles.

I find that it is valuable to spend this time.  As most of us have work to do every day that takes out minds to places that have nothing to do with answering the questions that are so important to science.  This is a way to build the true understanding and not just an opinion of what is true.  I have come up with many different views and answers from this type of chatter.  It is because it makes me think out side the box that we have been told we must stay in to do our daily work..  It is most valuable.

The better question should be how much time is to much time spent do this?  At some point there is the publishing that must go with this time spent.

Personally I find it very enlightening reflecting on other areas aside from scientific research. As stated by George "thinking outside the box" can indeed lead to unexpected beneficial effects in scientific work. The question of quantity of time directed at this is a personal choice. Generally I interact to questions that related to my subject (Science) and of my personal interest that too if I have time. There is nothing like that you have to sit for hours together. I hardly bother about RG Statistics. If you have more publications automatically you get high score. Answering questions does not give high score.

yes, I agree 100 % with you, and I generally interact to questions and answers that related to my subject (Science) and of my personal interest that too if I have time. During my career I have taken maximum. Yes, I know to have more publications automatically I can get high score, please doesn't interestiong to me. I think that even in the case of the non scientific questions there is a need for the mind of many to embrace the Philosophical end of science.  

More than one hundred years ago Philosophy and science broke apart it seemed like there would be no way to mend them back together.  This was the time when people like Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Max Planck, and others were transforming what was Physics into what is called Mathematical Physics and even the most well educated Philosopher of the day could no longer even understand the science.  

This transformation that took place over more than a century put a divide in the work of Philosophy and the work of Scientists.  This divide is felt today in the lack of understanding in science and of the true meaning of things.  When all I look at is an equation and a set of equations to get to the end or the answer I miss the point.

We are humans not machines and our science should have the understanding that brings reality to the science from our Philosophical approach to the learning. 

Socrates said it best 2500 years ago.

  "Learning was first and foremost a process of discovering what it is we wrongly thought we knew, of first exploring ignorance before going on to knowledge. Merely adding bits of wisdom to a mass of foolishness will not make people wiser.

It will only increase the danger of their Ignorance."

Our science without this chatter of the Philosophical is in my opinion Dangerous.

This is what I mean by my thoughts.

We are so specialized in our fields of study that there may be cures for many things in medicine that just have not been seen as important for the narrow line of thinking that comes from the research and development of many products.  This is the risk we take when we divide our work into such small parts that we miss the true meaning of the work. 

Philosophy is not dead it is just bound and gagged and left on the shelf so that it does not get in the way of making money.  The forms of communication like RG are the way to bring back some sanity to the science without jeopardizing the profits of the science.

I don't think we can compare the discussions on RG to the discussions we generally see in FB or other social networks. At least it is our obligation to make it different. I find it very interesting the possibility of sharing opinions with people that otherwise I would never talk to. This possibility makes us believe that we can, in fact, create a global community and work for a better understanding of Life and the Universe. Also, I feel that these discussions are less biased  by academic rank, age, and institution. Something that I don't feel in "real life" discussions. I will continue to ask/answer questions (if I do believe I can add something) but I don't make it my first priority.

Most of us are reading or answering questions, which are close to our expertise, from which we expect help and information or just for fun. I, personally most often read and answer questions in thephysical chemistry of polymers, which is my profession. Sometimes I answer to help others, who have questions. Sometimes it is obvious that students have to write a topic paper and the are lazy for collecting the relevant information. Even, in such cases sometimes I hlep, if I can. In some other cases I had personal discussion with more mature students or scientists wher either I gave advice or got one (many times very useful ones). One cannot be expert in evary topic. And there are general topics (e.g. in history, athoropology, religion) I am interested in but I am not an expert at all. We live in a superficial world: what I mean? that in a website of researchers, questions like these are not always valued due to the scientific focus, but philosophical questions are very important in the scientific community, because the science came from the basic philosophy

My humble feeling is there is nothing wrong in this. Experts on RG never use whale of time to answering/questioning. Is life completely mired in science and technology? There are other facets of life also. RG is not like a social network where blogs are floated by anybody and every body on any subject. RG is filled with academicians, researchers, and expert people from all faculties..... Somehow we can not discuss face-to-face, therefore, it is OK.

I think it depends on what someone considers as scientific value and science. There are topics that some people might regard as scientific while others not. 

Could such questions stimulate new science fields?

I find it useful and refreshing to participate in this Q & A section of RG. Diversity of disciplines and countries in these threads continue to give me new ideas and insights related to my own field.  

Not everything in life is science, but if you consider that scientific communication plays an important role, from exchanging knowledge and experiences among experts or peers in a certain discipline, as happens in Research Gate, or as writers popularizers of science, communicating content and general scientific and technological knowledge, with purpose of literacy in these disciplines to society.

The time spent on communication via social networks, it may be helpful to the person who performs it, either to meet some people, forward any information appointment for a face to face interview and deepen further in communication that can establish.

There is a lot of information derived from social interaction or whose benefits can only assess the variously involved in these experiences. Example communication networks of content and knowledge but essentially human and scientific values, beliefs, traditions and culture in general.

I didn't say and now I am not syaing that in near future I don't participate in it, on the contrary, I am very active with lhe scientific questions and answers, in particular with my promovation of my works, from 1981 until now (I will continue ...)! Yes, the diversity of disciplines and countries, but and individs, in these threads continue to give me new ideas and insights related to my own scientific field.

I think so too, it depends on what someone considers or scientific value and science. That there are topics some people might as scientific regard, while others not. Each of us has the ability to look at this issue and research relevant to the positive direction, despite that viewed from different angles, one sees from Japan, the other from South Africa, the other from Oregon, USA, by another from Norway and I,  you as Mediterranean people, as I, Bashkim, from Albania, a small country, but very nice with very good people, smart, workers and peace loving!

I think that Q&A activity on RG has some positive value for both researcher (who writes) and the community. There is an important difference between publication and Q&A activity. The 2nd is like a small note that takes not much time both to read and write, but still can contain interesting ideas. Something similar happens during the conferences,  in discussions after presentations of papers.

There are two types of questions addressed: a) professional, b) general. The 1st type typically receives not too many answers, but some value might be created that is useful in future research. In  the case of general questions there is a higher fraction of non-scientific answers. However, the discussion often becomes interdisciplinary or touches some applications of scientific activity to real life. Also, it creates a platform for marketing of ideas from the papers that otherwise would not be read by people away from the narrow field of those researchers who do that.

Thus, one may conclude that small investment in Q&A activity is better than non-participation. Now the basic question is: what fraction of time should be allocated for Q&A activity? I think that it is highly individual, depending on both easiness and speed to write posts in Q&A and multi-disciplinarity of a scientist. If a researcher has narrow range of interests and it takes him a lot of time to write an answer, it might be optimal either to neglect Q&A on RG or to write just a bit. But in the opposite case even spending half of time in this activity might become rewarding. Note that in many cases fighting with editors who reject some publications for minor reasons takes much more time than researcher spends on writing new ideas. In Q&A new ideas reach readers immediately and without barriers. The only minus is in lack of incentive for a researcher: RG score has no effect on promotion, while the number of publications in refereed journals has.

To my mind, extremes are bad, while harmonic combination of efforts in different directions (publications and Q&A on RG) is better. Thus, I think that people who have no published articles but only high scores for  Q&A on RG look suspicious. But at the same time, I hardly understand why some well published researchers do not participate in Q&A activity. Let us think that they do not have time.

In a paper with my participation about the talent (one can read it here, but it is too mathematical: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/303689706_Economics_of_Talent_Dynamics_and_Multiplicity_of_Equilibria ,  ) it is argued that only mental activity is not sufficient for success. A talent should also invest in access to the market to increase his bargaining power for his share of reward in the final product. But note that marketing is also important – it increases the overall value of output. Here we cannot count the sum of benefits for all researchers who read some author; we can only estimate the amount of clicks, or reads. That is why those researchers who publish something but think that there are too few readers, can put it also on RG and do some marketing in discussions. However, this does not apply for authors without publications. But I think that there are not so many people of this type. However, the quantity of publications differs from RG score for them. The people who have enough publications but not many in scored journals can increase their market access by going to Q&A.
