A new screening tool for detecting ELVO stroke has recently published (http://goo.gl/jhRQ5L). Performing VAN examination requires an assessment of motor weakness, raising both arms and holding them up for 10s. If weakness is observed and the patient also has any other positive finding (Visual, Aphasia and/or Neglect) is considered VAN positive.

They made a short pilot study (62 code stroke activations) showing that VAN had same sensitivity (100%), better specificity (90% vs 74%) than NIHSS (>=6), same negative predictive value and better positive predictive value (74% vs 58%).

What do you think?
