Social media such as YouTube, Instagram, WeChat, Tencent QQ, WhatsApp, and a few thousand others are gaining popularity. Are there any positive or negative consequences of these social media use for adolescents and teenagers?
The main purpose of social networking sites is to allow people to socialise, regardless of distance and other barriers. It helps relationships. Young people can make new friends and maintain existing friendships by frequent communication and sharing experiences online. For those teenagers who struggle to make social connections in the physical world, social media can offer a virtual alternative and prevent young people from feeling isolated.
Teenagers can now easily communicate with people from all over the world and experience all the benefits that exposure to other cultures and ideas brings.
It can be a difficult to understand why our teenager uses social media so much. It might seem like they're always online, and always distracted from the life in front of them.
Children can watch videos, view pictures and read blogs, many of which have educational benefits. Social networking sites can also facilitate discussion of homework and assignment topics and provide a base for research and fact-finding initiatives.
Always there is pros and cons of every technology.
If social media have advantages then it also have many disadvantages. Being a parents we need to provide the proper guidance to our children so that they cannot face any wrong effects of social media in there life. And that comes only when u try to communicate more and more with your child and try to behave in polite and friendly manner.
I think we need to understand their need and encourage them to use social media to explore their innovative ideas and sharing their ideas for betterment of society.

" Abstract
Importance Social media has had a profound effect on how children and adolescents interact. While there are many benefits to the use of social media, cyberbullying has emerged as a potential harm, raising questions regarding its influence on mental health.
Objective To review existing publications that examine the health-related effects of cyberbullying via social media among children and adolescents.
Evidence Review We searched 11 electronic databases from January 1, 2000, through January 17, 2012 (updated June 24, 2014). Studies were screened by 2 independent reviewers and were included if they reported primary research, described or evaluated the use of a social media tool in the context of cyberbullying, and were conducted with children or adolescents. Data were extracted by 1 reviewer and verified by a second. All studies were assessed by 2 reviewers for methodological quality using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Results were not pooled owing to heterogeneity in study objectives and outcomes; a narrative analysis is presented.
Findings Thirty-six studies in 34 publications were included. Most were conducted in the United States (21 [58.3%]), sampled middle and high school populations (24 [66.7%]), and included adolescents who were 12 to 18 years of age (35 [97.2%]). The median reported prevalence of cyberbullying was 23.0% (interquartile range, 11.0%-42.6%). Five studies reported inconsistent and/or weak correlations between cyberbullying and anxiety. Ten studies found a statistically significant association between cyberbullying and report of depression. Five studies investigated self-harm or suicidality, with conflicting results. Results indicate that the most common reason for cyberbullying is relationship issues, with girls most often being the recipients. Responses to cyberbullying are most often passive, with a pervasive lack of awareness or confidence that anything can be done.
Conclusions and Relevance There is a consistent relationship across studies between cyberbullying and depression among children and adolescents; however, the evidence of the effect of cyberbullying on other mental health conditions is inconsistent. This review provides important information that characterizes cyberbullying within the context of social media, including attributes of the recipients and perpetrators, reasons for and the nature of bullying behaviors, and how recipients react to and manage bullying behaviors. This information is critical to the development of effective prevention and management strategies".

Today, social media is good for all of us including the teenagers. But some of them may be addicted out of it, may be lured with the apparently attractive vulgars, may be away from their immediate required things to do, eg., study, play, creative works, social service, etc.
A sort of guidance from the elderly counterparts to learn about its (social media) controlled use is absolutely necessary.
Social networking sites exacerbate the fears of adolescents and increase their distress Social networking sites in the present age are among the most influential youth, especially in adolescence, where they become their own world in which they express their opinions freely and in the form they want, and they have the relationships they need, The two influential social networking sites on teens Cairo - CNN conducted a study on the impact of social networking sites on adolescents, including research on activity, habits and dimensions More than 200 teenagers have signed up on social networking sites to uncover the secrets of the teenage world with Social Media. The study included answering several questions about how adolescents use social networking sites. What kinds of harassment do they have behind electronic screens? With regard to the role of the family, researchers focused on the role of parents in how to deal with their children adolescents, and what they do to protect them from what happens in the world of social communication? The survey revealed that adolescents can lose their social networking sites, search for new ones, and follow up on what they publish more than 100 times a day. This is like an immediate measure of popularity and popularity. The teenager gets it when he publishes something on his page, and the lack of it or said it means the lack of a teenager to the people what negatively affects him. "There is a lot of evidence of adolescent addiction to social networking sites and smart phones," says Dr. Robert Farris, a psychiatrist and co-author of the study. "They have a great passion and a satisfying curiosity to know what Online is doing, So to lose these sites many times and repeatedly, making them a major part of their daily lives can not be cut off or abandoned. 6% of parents are keen to follow up the accounts of children on social networking sites. The study included students and students from the preparatory stage of 8 different schools, located in 6 US states, by registering their accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on a secure server made by an electronics company After two years of study, a team of researchers monitored and analyzed about 150,000 adolescent publications on these sites every 6 months, as well as adolescents' answers to a number of survey questions About the nature of their use The reality of social communication, with 61 percent of the teens who participated in the research reported that they frequent social networking sites to see the number of comments and comments received by their publications, and 35 percent said they do so to see what their friends do without them, while 21 percent said they want Make sure they are not bad by others when they are not online. While monitoring the dissemination of sexual images and videos in 15 percent of cases. The study found that the greater the time of adolescents on social networking sites, the more tense their nerves and increased their fears and sleep, and fear of any abuse from another side, adolescents may also follow up what is published by their enemies and not only friends, which makes him vulnerable to psychological disorders and may be More aggressive and hostile to his social environment. For adolescent families, the researchers also looked at their cases, and found that 94 percent of parents did not know about the bickering, harassment, and moral abuse that their teens do on social networking sites. Teenagers have a great passion and curious curiosity to know what is happening "online" in their absence The study showed that the remaining percentage of parents, or 6 percent are keen to follow the accounts of children on these sites and control the contents, and correct any deviations, In these cases, the children's pages were devoid of the usual moral violations of others, as well as the children's better psychological health and more balance in dealing with the social environment, and even better health. Dr. Fahmi Nashed, a professor of social psychology at Cairo University, said that adolescents at this stage do not differentiate between their lives in the real world and their virtual lives on the Internet, and mix them in a way that affects their real life negatively. He stressed that they always tend to publish on the Internet and social networking sites what they can never say in their daily lives on the ground, including the guidance of dirty youth and abusive words to others, the use of terms and sexual abuse, and sometimes the dissemination of sexual images or videos also or sent to others to abuse them , And to refer explicitly to drugs of all kinds, despite the age of not more than 16 years, which makes these sites their favorite world and most attractive to them from real life, which is full of restrictions and controls. Dr. Fahmi also pointed out that social networking sites have turned into a negative addiction among many teenagers and young people. Some may not eat until they leave the mobile phone and feel a large internal vacuum if they move away from social networking sites, which makes Social Media a threat. True to the real world of adolescents and negatively affect their behavior and mental state.
There are always two sides of a coin. Parental guidance is necessary for teen usage of the social media to minimize negative content accumulation as a result of unguarded usage.
Social media helps in better connectivity , faster dissemination of information and quick learning. It keeps one updated about the happenings in real time and help in better preparation. However excessive use may hamper the progress.
Using social media has a negative effect on teen agers since it takes more of their time and will split them from real life also has more health effect especially on their eyes. Moreover, there will be no parent control so will draw them to different relation that is not for them
In this era, where science & technology has reached its zenith, social media provides an open platform in reaching out peoples, also to express an opinion on every issue. Not only the teenagers but to all grown up elderly peoples, there is a need to realize that internet( which is a sea of information) is not all about social media. Social media is all about what u make out of it and how u use it. It does connects peoples but has risk factors too particularly cyber bullying, privacy & safety issues. Having said that, all we need is to open our eyes, for time is unparalleled and cannot be replaced.
Social networks have risks for adolescents Many of these risks: Inappropriate Content Social networks are full of some inappropriate content for teens. . This is very dangerous. It is possible for a child or adolescent to identify things that may not be appropriate for his or her age. . These networks provide information without making an effort to search for violence, sex, drugs or weapons that are harmful. In order for parents to ensure that the child is not looking for such content, it is necessary to talk to children directly and directly about the content provided through the social networks and that there is some content not allocated to them, and when any inappropriate content must be directed to him Directly and not secretly, and parents can download some programs that close inappropriate pages on social networks.
Social media is an interactive platform where everyone can evolved oneself into a better being. However if misused, it can served as a detrimental effect specially to the blooming youngsters. Also, all the users of social media should be careful about the contents they write or the files they uploaded.

Well, it depends on its usage. As it stands, it appears to have more negative effect than positive, as teens are exposed to all sorts of highly sensitive contents and they also tend to utilize it for various forms of shady activities. One solution to this problem is constant monitoring, guidance and counseling of such teens by adults before it gets out of hand thus, increasing the probability of wasting subsequent generations.
We still are believers and we are not in the mode to change but i believe that social media has so many newer and knowledgeable things to offer like RG, but still my SIXTH sense keep telling me that "All that glitters is not gold" . The overuse, and no body can deny that has taken the physical activity away from the new generation, while being more knowledgeable in many ways realism is something where they struggle, the enormous data has let them waste a lot of time, the traditional socialization patterns are changing and yes all these media are associated with misuses, abuse and so many other evils which are/or should not be allowed with certain younger age groups.
Anyway the world needs to apply limits to its use as is written on every movie and every instrument and use has to be streamlined for better
Social networking sites have negative and positive aspects, but unfortunately, adolescents often do not know where their interests lie، therefore we find them using it negatively.
Social networking programs and the Internet as like as was television, cinema, and theater in our time. Attracts young ages against the fears of adults in front of them. The important thing that there "social home-connect" to the young spirit to guide the mind of them in the right direction, after this so we give them trust with a comfortable heart.
Child can get media benefits by being involved with your child and her use of media – visiting quality websites together, encourage your child to use educational software, and watch TV shows that offer extra learning opportunities.
In the line with the question of Social media in relation to the teenagers , sometime back I have expressed my views in my article under the captioned '' The responsibility of Social media which I submit herewith for your perusal with a request to offer your valuable views in this respect .
Social media (SM) has the good and the bad side not just to the youth but also the adults.
a) social networks; the youth are more connected than ever with friends and across the world. They can get or upload pictures or videos at will and the information of a terror attack travels faster in SM before the Television news can catch it.
b) Reading culture and creativity; social has a lot to do with snap, record and share. I lecturer university students and one student can have his phone buzz over ten times in 1 minute. and at each buzz the student is tempted to look and see who has sent a message or even respond. I often ask myself, when do they get time to think and engage creativity. Now days, even adults at work into social media can hardly concentrate.
c) Information flow and business; the information flow on SM is outstanding and many businesses and social event have thrived because of it.
In a nut shell, SM if unchecked will have very deep cutting effects to the youth. teaching them to deal with social media might help a lot. Several stories have been aired where people highly popular on social media have committed suicide following depression. It provides an allusion of feeling close to everyone and occupies productive time if unchecked.

Yes, the means of social communication may affect negatively or positively on boys and girls in adolescence and this requires parents to increase the diligence to follow up the children continuously, especially those in adolescence
Well, social media is both a boon and bane.. for teenagers social media can be used to create networking, to share creative ideas, but at the same time addiction to social media can be harmful for the teenagers as rightly said by one of fellow researchers it can also distract teenagers from social and human relationships..

We all know today social media is a vital part of society and it affects positively as well as negatively teenagers. Discouraging teenagers to use it is completely wrong because it teaches a lot to us but teaching our teenagers to use it in a right way is important.
Prof Gulzar Shah thank you for this important question :the social media: very useful but for me; it s have a big danger on the values of children and adolescent , their mental health and building of personality
Personally I reject all these platforms and I do not have any accounts at all in any (except for the platform dedicated to intellectuals and scientists as RG platform). I think their positive aspects are not enough to accept their bad ones.
A second point to raise:
it's worrying about their negative effect on teenagers, but what about adults?
As "consumers", are they, themselves, safe?
As "producers", are they innocent?
Do they have the right to be part of these platforms as producers or consumers?
Sure, it helps being more social, keep in touch with all the world and news around you. The question is just reasonable usage. I mean: not spend there the whole day.
