I have made computer based tutoring tools that students use to learn specific concepts. The tutor is designed to provide hints and feedback at the request of the student. If the students use too less or too much hints, is it going to affect their learning? I am looking to collect some literature based evidence.
The difficulty in judging whether there are 'too many' hint requests is that some learners might need more requests than others to make sense of the concept in the context in which it is presented.
Hint requests can be a function of the diversity of the learner base - and their experience related to the concept being learnt and the experience in the learning context.
It can also be a function of high/low involvement in the experience, see consumer behaviour (attached some refs - I've included old ones, so you can follow the 'who has cited this article' feature). I hope this helps develop your work. Kind regards, Tony.

I think students' learning would be affected in a positive way as they would be given as much as supporting hints as needed to arrive at the correct answer.

Thanks, Debra. I would be interested in academic literature that show the effect of hints.
Debra provides an interesting suggestion. Using case studies has shown to provide a positive effect by getting students involved in the discussion. Addressing the gap (providing hints) between literature and the meaning has increased pass rates in the Management and Leadership courses I teach. Try looking up case study as a teaching tool, or teaching the gap.
