I have to order chemicals for new methods that my colleagues and I want to try out. I got offers from few different companies, but there are huge differences in price for certain chemicals because they are not produced by the same company. ALL OF THE CHEMICALS IN THE OFFER HAVE P.A. LEVEL OF PURITY. I'd rather buy a chemical of better quality than cheaper one, so I want to know if there is a significant difference in quality of chemicals produced by Himedia and Panreac and those produced by Fisher UK and Acros Organics? How come there are such a differences in pricing?
Check catalogue for purity level...If these chemicals are only for synthesis ..If they have same price give priority for low cost chemicals
Without naming any chemical company, a chemist ought to know that the chemicals used in academic circles or in industries are broadly classified into 3 types: 1) Coarse chemicals "which are the cheapest with significant amounts of impurities". 2) Fine chemicals "which are the most expensive since they are very pure". Sometimes they are called AnalR which is abbreviation of analytic-grade reagent(s). 3) Technical-grade chemicals. These are the mostly bought chemicals by universities. They may have little impurities but they serve the purpose of teaching laboratories. Those chemists, involved in research, have to put an effort to render them suitable for research,i.e. to convert them from technical to fine chemicals.
Any chemical ,e.g. benzoic acid, can be coarse or technical or fine. We were taught in the early 1980s to find out by ourselves what sort of chemical we were using during our postgraduate research.
