I want to supply power to gate driver of DC-DC converter's IGBT. For that i have to get in consideration the input voltage of power converter (100kV). So in my part of power supply i have to use an air transformer (with rectifier & inverter), which allows to ensure a high isolation between power converter and power supply.
To my understanding, high coupling of flux (meaning high transferred power) and high isolation (meaning large distance between wires) are contradictory in air-core transformer. You should either use ferrite core (with associated loss) or put the entire wire assembly into glass block. With glass, you can make gap between 100 kV wires about 0.5mm, producing tighter coupling compared to plastic and air isolation.

The power transferred is not necessarily limited by air gaps.
Using coils to transfer energy is a widely spread procedure in energy transmission and gaps of up to 20 cm are covered with reported energy transfer efficiencies of >96%.

If you consider two independent coils to be a coreless transformer, transferring your amount of energy should not get you into troubles.
A more interesting question to me would be about the application you're talking about.
Usually, IGBTs are not used in a 100kV environment and in case you build a multilevel inverter, the isolation strength is far less than the DC-link's full voltage would imply.

Tesla was the first person to try this, and the approach has been re-tried over the years, including MIT abour 4 years ago. You should be able to get a lot of information from the Internet, and from what I know about it, I believe that 100W power transfer and 100 kV isolation is feasible. Good luck!

Dear Holger, your document is very interesting for me. I have read the descriptive of the product but i didn't find the insulation margin. You said that is useful for HV performance of the system, is the product capable to ensure for example 100kV of insulation?
