I think you can do by ALD, CVD, PVD methods. these are quıte common ways to make metal thin layers even in atomic and nano precise.
I am not sure about electro deposition on polymers. But as Behzad Hassas pointed out you can use PVD. However I dont thin that CVD and ALD are useful because they are done at higher temperature which a polymer may not be able to withstand.

are you somehow limited to the type of polymer. As electrodeposition will only work on conductive sample what about polypyrrole? If you need very smooth metal surfaces this might be quite challenging.
I really would recommend you to further work on PVD, which is much more simple in this case.

You can use PVD methods like sputtering, vacuum thermal evaporation by resistive heating or electron beam melting depending upon the metal to be deposited (polyimide has a reasonably high melting temperature within polymers). Depending upon the thickness you want to achieve you can possibly deposit a thin layer of metal using PVD and then using this layer as an electrode, furthur coating using electrodeposition is a possibilty.
Electrodeposition is quit difficult as your substrate is non-conducting.
PVD is good option.... for batter film deposition you can use PLD .....
Pulse laser deposition, by that atomic layer by layer deposition is possible..... almost defect free deposition you will get......
one more option may electroless deposition also be possible .....
If you couldnt use PVD or CVD you can use my Microwave method to produce your thin films microwave heating is less than 300c and this method accures in less than 1minutes.but you can use it just for special metal oxide
There are well known industrial processes based on Pd and Sn aqueous solutions. The piece is dipped in the bath and then covered using an electroless Cu coating. At that point is possible to coat the piece using a common electrodeposition process. Information can be easily found in Internet.
After the sample has been treated in the Pd-Sn solution it is able to be covered with a thin layer of Cu (usually) without the use of an external power source (no electricity) so the process is electo - less.
