The easiest way to functionalize or charge MWCNTs is by oxidation. Several methods had already used to the purpose. You can use nitric acid, mixtures of nitric and sulfuric acid or hydrogen peroxide/ sulfuric acid (for example you can read the attach paper). With this method you can add oxygenated groups (COOH, OH...). MWCNTs will bring a net negative surface charge. The carboxylic group can be further modified by a nucleophilic acyl substitution. However, there are also other strategies.
Anyway, to depost nanotubes in a directional manner you should cover them with denaturated DNA. If you control the concentration of the complex you can obtain a liquid crystalline phase with oriented nanotubes (see papers).
Probably, you should also take into account a possible functionalization of a substrate.
