I'm working on a small project where I'm trying to covalently bond nanomaterial to polyethylene. For reasons to long to describe, there are -NH2 surface functionalities on the nanomaterial that I would like to use to bond to the polymer chain (polyethylene) and I've come to a bit of a standstill when trying to find a way to do so. Any ideas?
Some papers were published on this topic. One of the pioneering ones is; Polymer, 48(6), 2007, 1632-1640. It may hopefully help you.
Ethylene monomer is bifunctional I.e. it has two binding sites which are used up in polyethylene formation by chain polymerization. To attach NH2 group you need to have a monomer which ought to be polyfunctional which polyethylene is not. So it is not amenable to attach the group.to polyethylene chain molecule.
Thank you for the help, it seems that using pre-modified PE is the only possible solution then!
