I mentioned on various occasions that one can measure the stacking fault energy by a combination of TEM and XRD studies just observing the opposite displacements of (111) and ( 002) spectral lines, and the deference of which is denoted by Del (2 Theta) in FCC crystals, one calculates the stacking faults probability -defined as the fraction of 111 lattice planes per unit volume is faulty- which results not only the density of extended dislocation but also the intrinsic stacking fault energy if the separation distance between the Shockley partials is supplied by TEM measurements for deformed specimens.
There is a mathematical formula which gives the connection between the intrinsic stacking fault width and stacking fault energy which involve Burgers vector b , shear modulus mhu , Poissons' ratio v, the angle beta between Burgers vector and dislocation line for the perfect mixed dislocations in FCC lattice. (SEE: Theory of Dislocations by John Hirth and Jens Lothe, page 298. Eq. 10-15).

From the point view of NDT, If the grain changes could make differences in the electrical conductivity or magnetic permeability, you could test eddy current, but you will need prepare special specimens for the calibration.
