If you have access to a process simulation tool like ChemCad, Pro II, or Aspen Plus you should be able to implement a procedure that optimizes the number of stages versus total energy required for the separation. I am familiar with the Aspen Plus tool and they have quite robust procedure called Column Targeting. There are also many articles in the technical literature that you can refer to for discussions of the theory and general approach.
