It might be helpful to explore efficacy studies of therapies that utilize consistent interpretation of defensive maneuvers as the vehicle of change. Otto Kernberg and colleagues' transference focused psychotherapy (TFP) might be an example. Here are some references of a few attempts to test TFP efficacy with BPD:

I could add that also Davanloo' s work on brief psychotherapy gave a great importance to the challenge of patient defenses. Of course, Kernberg TFT focus greatly on resistance in the transference and to deal with it without the time of a traditional psychoanalisis.
