All studies with electronic medical devices recommend rules for cell phone use in hospitals(*). Given this fact, it can occur when a device is automated pipetting a sample and reagent as well as during the measurement. External magnetic interference can cause noise in the measurement system and robotic devices producing erroneous measurements.

I have not been able to link odd errors to close proximity of cell phones. But this may be really hard to completely dismiss. If this was an issue, the proximity of roof-top cellular antennas and/or wifi routers should also be of concerns. I assume that some vendors (e.g. Tecan) place the cell phone prohibited sticker on their instrument just-in-case.
