Water microbial load is an important factor for human health and disease suppressiveness. if a tool or technique is available to estimate indicative meta-microbial load in Water during field visits it would be very useful to issue advisories to the peoples. Similarly we need to identify a technique by which we could detect load of specific pathogenic bacterial load in a water sample. It would be particularly useful to detect pathogens like Pseudomonas sp.

The solutions from Oxford Nanopore (VolTRAX and MinION) comes quite close to do both sample preparation and sequencing in the field, but If you are merely looking for a fast indication of the overall load, ATP measurements are for sure applicable in the field. To my knowledge, there is no specific test for Pseudomonas that can be applied in the field.

Yes microbial load in water is important factor for health. Recently, I have read one of article that performed total microbial load by estimating total intracellular ATP content by technology developed by GL Bio control France. However specific microbial load can be estimated by culture dependent method in lab (cost effective way) or culture independent (metagenomics) with extra costing but quantitative manner
