Cathinone, a monoamine alkaloid naturally found in the leaves and shrubs of Khat (Catha edulis) is reportedly responsible for the stimulating effects of the leaves which is chewed for recreational and sociocultural reasons in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Yemen and many western countries. However, there have been some controversy over the legality of the drug use in many countries, although there have been no tangible evidences for the harms so far. Is there any report on the potential adverse or positive health effects of cathinone and its derivatives in humans or animals?
