Quite a few problems problems with crowdsourcing/VGI have been identified, which have effectively prevented an operationalization of such approaches. I work in the field disaster risk management, looking specifically at remote sensing-based disaster damage mapping. A number of VGI-based attempts at such mapping have been made, but they have failed to convince. As described in this article (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/234834732_Collaborative_damage_mapping_for_emergency_response_The_role_of_Cognitive_Systems_Engineering) there are serious issues with how to recruit volunteers, how to recruit the proper volunteers, how to train/instruct them, how to monitor them and guide them in their contribution process.
