I'm interested in understanding the positioning of Mujaddid (Reformers) and Mujahid (Jihadi) ideas currently employed in Islam. Because there is a lack of non-western ideas in this space, any sort of information would be welcome.
- Are both the words originating from the same space?
- Is there a connection between the role of the two?
- Have the connotation of the words changed due to the recent extremist activities which have possibly changed global public opinion on the usage of the words?
The two wirds do not derive from the same root . Linguistically speaking, there is no connection between the two concepts. That takes care of the third bullet.
actually the two words do not have any root connection. but we can understand some connotation between these words. because muceddid is some one who returns the religious thought to its root/base/primitive form and who struggles for this mission and because he struggles for the religious mission he can be called a mujahid. but on the other hand the word "mujahid" reminds us of the fighting for Islam by weapons but not by pen. so the close connotations of this word are words and ideas which are related to the war/fighting and the struggle done by this way.
There's no root connection between the two worlds. I think there's no conceptual connecion ; the word derived fron root j-h-d- hat could be related to the concept of mujaddid is mujtahid, but you must mind to the fact that the mujaddid is authorized to renew the religion (every century has its muijaddid), while the mujtahid isa a religious scholar whose autority is not absolute.

From a linguistic point of view, the root is common to the two, I apologize for my earlier, hasty remark. j-h-d is the root. However, they are two different measures/patters: the /?ijtahad/ is measure VIII, [jaahad] is measure IV. Hence, the core meaning, 'to strive', is shared, yet the political orientation and social function for each is different. Thank you, Mohd Yaseen Gada for sharing.

Right, Angelo. /mujaddid/ and /mujaahid/ have different roots. Moh'd brought up the shared root between /mjujaahid/ and /mujtahid/, which is irrelevant to the question. Without looking back, I thought I had made a hasty remark. My said remark refers to the two different measures (IV and VIII) of j-h-d that Moh'd referenced,
