We are doing research in transition metal coordination complexes. Is there any revalance for finding band gap by Tauc plot from UV spectra and any relationship with that band gap with band gap obtained from Cyclic voltametry and theoretical HOMO LUMO energy difference?
Both can be used for the determination of energy bandgaps. Cyclic voltametry considers reducing or oxidising potential of molecular species while in the case of optical bandgap by Tauc, electron-hole pairs production at specific wavelenth is used to determine the bandgap. The values of optical bandgap are generally lower than cyclic voltammetry due to the extra coloumbic interaction between the excited hole and electron. Cyclic voltametry involves on the other hand various influecing factors, such as double charge layer, diffusion of species, molecular adsoprtion-desoprtion etc, which is not the case with optical bandgap. So for the purpose of simple calculation of bandgap, Tauc plot would suffice.
