I have carried out a hydroseeding trial using early succession native tree and herbaceous species in ground that had one crop of Pinus radiata.

Matt Denton-Giles did something similar with fern hydroseeding.during his MSc years ago - Massey University. Maybe check out his thesis, and get in touch with his supervisors? I doubt it was published, but I'm sure there was a bit of work going on at the time. Let me know if you're stuck, I can get hold of Matt (he's overseas) if you don't have any luck through the library.
