I am working on pigment extraction (carotenoid extraction) from Archaea and found a pigment which gives UV-visible spectra maxima at 245nm. It is a pink color pigment.
Do you know what pigment that might be or can you give me any generalized or specific method for the extraction and analysis of pigments from Archaea.
Ok my first question is: does the spectra of this unknown pigment resemble that of the carotenoid group ? if not then, you can easily rule it out of the carotenoid category. It is not uncommon to also get ascorbic acid extracted with the carotenoids. This antioxidant compound also gives UV-visible spectra at 245nm.
On the other hand, since it has a pink colouration; one might suspect it is rhodopsin. This pigment has a UV-visible spectra maxima between 280 and 500nm.
I agree with Gayathri above. Is the UV spectrum of a carotenoid one? Have you run LCMSMS or the info comes from HPLC? I think you need to run and identify the component's mass also. Then you can find from the literature. Carotenoids's color cary from yellow to orange and reddish, but also flavonoids can be pinky.
