For a research project thinking of measuring the first phase or acute phase insulin release in diabetes patients. Wonder whether there is any normal range for this or is it 'comparatively' lesser in diabetics when compared to the normal individuals? Thank you
Diabetes, type 1 or type 2?
First phase insulin secretion diminishes in both cases, reasons are different.
Both major forms of Diabetes are progressive diseases. In the case of T1D, the destruction of islets is eventually complete in relatively shorter time whereas in case of T2D, the progression is much slower.
As you can imagine, there can be no "normal" levels of first phase insulin secretion in diabetes for it's a matter of what stage of disease progression one makes a measurement. The values will range from less than those observed in healthy subjects to zero.
If you were to perform a literature search, you would have found a great deal of literature on the subject very easily.

Its on type 2 diabetes to be exact. None of the literature clearly states on whether there exists a normal range, as the changes seem only to be relative. I just want to confirm it before proceeding with my study.

You cannot expect a "normal" range in a progressively deteriorating condition. The best one can do is to have a relative change with time.

An extremely impaired acute insulin response (AIR) is inherent to the pathophysiology of diabetes, so even if one sets a normal range for AIR in normal subjects, it will be far lower in diabetes, near zero in most cases, even in early stages. So , the answer is NO: there is not a normal range of AIR in diabetic patients. At most, one could find an AIR threshold below which there is high probability of a patient to have diabetes. I could not find a scientific reason for that except for a threshold that could be used to predict the future development of diabetes. But one should take into account the prevailing insulin sensitivity. There could be some overlap of AIR between insulin resistant diabetc subjects in an earlier stage and very insulin sensitive subjects with normal or impaired glucose tolerance.
