I'm skeptical, especially as I have refereed a lot of low quality research. However, a conversation with a colleague led me to think that there may be some niche (maybe AKI or research in certain parts of the world?) not currently covered by journals. What do you think? Are there particular forms (e.g. online only, with discussion forums etc.) that you think could enhance nephrology journals?
I fully agree that there is an urgent need for a new nephrology journal . In the recent past , there has been a lot of data on AKI in developing countries , which are mostly community acquired & the diagnosis has to be made by primary & secondary care doctors . In addition , CKD has become an important cause of morbidity & mortality in developing countries , with an epidemic of Type 2 DM . The combination of AKI + CKD is a matter of deep concern . The problem of present nephrology journals is that they cater only to tertiary care nehrologist , instead of important messages to primary & secondary care physicians . The messages of KDIGO has to reach only through an inclusive new nephrology journal , whose editorial board should also include some prominent non nephrologists from developed & developing nations . AKI & CKD have to be diagnosed & treated in the initial stages by non nephrologists & the number of nephrologists in developing countries is very low . There is a definite need for online & relevant discussion forums in these journals .
Dear colleagues!
I personally feel, there is no need for a new journal. Although all aspects addressed by Shing are correct, there are currently many journals covering the topics as e.g. Indian Journal of Nephrology, any Chinese journals, Saudi journal of Nephrology of Transplantation etc.. Africa and South America stand behind admittedly but we should avoid implementing to many subjournals for sub-topics of nephrolog in my opiniony!?
