The question might be apparently simple, but I could not google a single satisfactory answer. I would like to develop a device for picking a number of small stones from the ground without human bend.
May i ask the purpose of doing that? That would help to find a solution

Currently in industry a lot of pick and place operations robots are in operation that perform the same task.
Lemme Tell the purpose then.. I would like to design a machine that would pick nutmeg (if u r not familiar plz google it out:its a nut basically) and gathers it in such a way that the person who collects it need not bent.. I would highly appreciate if u could help out with a simple design for the same
There are any number of grasping mechanisms (e.g., tongs) you could attach to the end of a pole for this purpose. To avoid excess motion, a simple, low two-wheeled cart attached to the end of a second pole of the same length could be used to receive the retrieved nuts. The worker would then push the cart with one hand and retrieve the nuts with the other hand operating the grabber. The grabber would have some sort of combined handle/operating lever so it could be done with one hand, similar to the device shown in the link in Ann Witt's post.
