The literature I'm running into seems to focus on roleplay in the classroom. I'm interested in whether students can roleplay to enhance their studying. For example, can they roleplay as a teacher who's studying for the classroom, or roleplay as a marker when reviewing their work?
I tried out both and they felt helpful.

I did google this before asking, but it seems to come from the teacher-side rather than the student-side. I recently ran into the idea that 'gifted kids' can imagine that they're about to teach the content before studying. Thinking about it. It might fall under a different banner, e.g. using imagery.

Role-playing is experiential learning. As such, it is important to debrief the experience with the actors and other students in the class who were observing, The instructor should have their own notes to provide feedback as well, either during the feedback discussion with the whole class or at the end. Do not give your feedback first because students giving their feedback are learning as they do it. Be familiar with the role-play situation, as well as its learning purpose and goals. Focus feedback around those two things. Ask lots of questions from those who are role playing to give them a chance to practice self-reflection and learning. Good questions include: Why was that important? How did you see that making a difference? What other ways might you have achieved the same outcome? Why did you choose the approach you used? Who, What, Where, Why, and When - good OPEN questions.
I think I worded this badly. I was thinking of students using roleplay at home. I may have had an overly board definition of roleplay, where it includes thinking like an educator, marker, etc, acting according to that thinking, and suspending some disbelief. Sorry for not clarifying sooner. The answers are appreciated and informative, nonetheless
Students who role play may want to consider reading poetry out loud. The use of poetry in role play is a powerful one.
