Einstein's mass-energy equivalence does not tell the mechanism of conversion except the equivalent of magnitudes on both sides. There must be some mechanism involved between them that converts the mass into equivalent energy via light speed.

To add to the previous answer, electron positron annihilation resulting in two photons is a very familiar mechanism converting mass into kinetic energy of photons.
