Inkscape is a free vector drawing programme. I use it also for for spider genitalia and I find it very useful. First I take photo in stereomicrope or microscope, then import photo to Inkscape in a separate layer. Next I add more layers for line drawing, scale bars, and shadowing. Drawing is made on top of image so it is good to stack photos so photo is sharp from top to bottom. I use smal dots to gain a little 3D effect in the shadow layer. It takes a litle practice but you will be able to produce good quality drawings that are scalable.
