Acacia is salt tolerant but the only way to reduce soil salinity is to have good drainage and flush or irrigate with fresh water :)

I can't even imagine how plant leaves can significantly reduce soil salinity. Nowadays the most powerful tool in this case is flushing of the soil with clean water, and as I know there is no problem in West Bengal with rivers all over the state. As for me, I look on the experiments with Acacia like on the treatment of cancer with a leaf of plantain.

I am neither interested nor qualified to perform research in Agriculture. My present area of interest is Ethnomedicine and Ethnopharmacology, though my Ms and present service is related with Immunology and Microbiology.

I frequently visit different rural areas to get information on use of plant derived medicines by tribal and other rural people. During interaction with people of saline area ( Bay of Bengal border at parts of Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal state), I received that information. They are cultivating A. nilotica at the boarders of each small land holding. You know- such people trust on their practices.

But from the responses of this question in RG, it appears to me that perhaps such study report is not available.

Now I want request every efficient scientist to validate that idea of those people, if possible.

Thanks for inviting me to participate in this discussion.

Please do note that I am an absolute lay-man in the field of Soil Science / Soil Conservation / Soil Remediation. So my contribution to this discussion should be treated as from an wild and unbiased idea generator in a group decision making / idea generating process.

I am basically an Organic Chemist with a Dr. Ing. ( Equivalent to a Ph.D. ) degree in Chemical Engineering and have behind me ca. 30 years of experience of working in an industrial R&D centre in the field of petrochemicals. Right now I am enjoying a retired life.

The following would be my comments:

(a) In my personal opinion, "no way" can be "the only way" , - we have to carry out research to find out an alternative way.

(b) We must learn to respect the knowledge / wisdom of our fore-fathers. We simply cannot dump their ideas into the dustbin, without doing any systematic studies on them and then wait for some one else to do that and generate patent based on the knowledge and sell the product/process/technology to us.

(c) The plant in question, that is Acacia nilotica, is said to be planted on the borders of the paddy field and I understand further from one of the participants that the plant is tolerant towards salt ingressed soil. I would like to understand it from a different angle. Instead of terming the tree salt tolerant, can we call the tree to be one requiring salt for its growth ? A wild idea ! We may carry out research on this. If the answer to this question is not already known.

(d) If the answer to the question posed under point (c) above, there must be plants like coconut trees which require common salt for its growth to be put in the soil around the plant. Can such plants be cultivated around the boundaries of paddy fields to protect the soil from salt (Soil Remediation) ?

In West Bengal, a province that is situated in the eastern part of India, I believe rain water comes in plenty mostly every year during monsoon. There might be some exceptions. But our problem is, I believe, poor water- management ( rain water harvesting and preservation / storage and proper utilisation). Paradoxically there are districts that suffer from drought and flood, sometimes may be in the same year.

1. Dr. Bandyopadhyay - Sir, I am more outsider than you in the subject. I am basically a Veterinarian with B.V.Sc. degree. With National level Scholarship, I studied my M.V.Sc. (Immunology) in Indian Veterinary Research Institute. Fortunately, I was under a very good Supervisor there, Prof. (Dr.) G.C.Ram, who injected the actual research concept in me.

I received my Ph. D from The West Bengal University of Health Sciences (subjects covered - Ethnopharmacology and Microbiology).

If a person like me, who had no basic or initial knowledge, can dare to document the knowledge of ethnic and rural people regarding use of plants as medicine in southern districts of West Bengal, India by own expense, anybody can do anything.

Sir, I am struggling to establish a new type of healthcare system with direct use of Succulent plant parts (juices/latex/ cut pieces etc.) after validation of their actual efficacy as reported by ethnic people as well as documented in our old texts.

I have gone through the article. It is about more tolerance of soil salinity by the seedlings of Acacia nilotica than Dalbergia sissoo. Such comments are also delivered by Dr. Irshad Sharafutdinov.

Abstract: The growth responses of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. and Acacia nilotica (Linn.) Willd. ex. Del. seedlings were compared on different levels of soil sodicity and salinity. The growth and dry weight of one-year old seedlings decreased as the level of sodicity and salinity increased in both species. However, the suppression in growth caused by sodicity and salinity was relatively greater in D. sissoo than in A. nilotica. A. nilotica showed wider response breadth compared with D. sissoo on both the gradients. Further, the response breadths were comparatively higher under sodicity levels than under salinity levels. Root : shoot ratio and root weight ratio in both the species increased on increasing the levels of sodicity and salinity, whereas relative growth rate and net assimilation rate indicated a reverse trend.
