There are many measures such as REALM, NVS, TOFHLA etc. at clinical settings but I need a measure in Public Health (as I would like to research health literacy beyond a medical perspective), ideally suitable for children. Any suggestions?
Hi Rimante...I am also looking for a tool to assess knowledge on nutrition and nutritional behavior or to evaluate practices in mothers of children in a community setting. I would appreciative if you share any standard and reliable tool available, which can be used for research in a developing country. Thanks. I will let you know if I find any...
Hey there, as I mentioned before there are many tools to measure health literacy in adults in the clinical setting, but not for youth and public health setting. Probably you read already the systematic review of Carbone E. et.al. 2011 "Nutrition and health literacy", this article is really good, you should read if you did not. However I should disappoint you , I still did not find proper tool to assess nutrition literacy. Diamond J. developed nutrition literacy scale, sadly i was not able to contact him and could not find that scale to use it or look at it. I think i will use health activities literacy scale but still need to adopt to nutrition. If your research focus on parents then maybe its a good idea to measure parents nutritiin literacy by using Newest Vital Sign (NVS) or nutrition label survey. NVS has 6 questions, easy to perform and to score.
By the way, I think it is a very good idea of your research to measure nutrition literacy in the community setting, best of luck! If you hear anything what I need let me know!
Hi, it is very interesting to learn about your research in nutrition literacy.. There are no tools for any of these type of studies Each researcher prepares a questionnaire based on the purview of the study and administer it to the population. you may also use email or post on the website considering the technological development. However In India , we still follow visits door to door for collecting data(a very traditional and basic form of data collection). But considering the nature of our population and their level of literacy, that's only option we have.
And I believe, no universal questionnaire will be feasible for nutritional knowledge data as it depends on many factors and varies from population to population.
Hey Saileela, thank you for your response. Unfortunatelly I did not find any tool to measure nutritional literacy, but there are many for health literacy (some very useful some useful just for assessing basic literacy in clinical setting). I agree with you that it is hard if possible to find a universal tool to use in all populations.
Hi,Rimante,I shall send one of the tools which I used in my research. But it is not a standard or tested tool.It was prepared by me for my research need in India. I hope it will be of some use to you. I shall upload the same in a couple of days. All the best.
Dear Andrew, thank you very much for the link. I really loved the lecture you gave on health literacy and its measurement. It was very useful information! I would suggest for everyone to have a look!
