Is there any commercial program software to analyse infilled RC structure which use discrete element method (DEM)? which one is better approach: smeared crack approach or discrete element method, for infilled frame finite element analysis?
Modeling of RC and furthermore infilled RC structural members is relatively complicated thus using the discrete finite element method will make numerical instabilities even larger. In addition to that, the discrete approach is not the optimum numerical method to be used when it comes to modeling of RC structures given the nature and behavior of concrete. if your only choices are discrete and smeared, definitely the smeared crack model is the best way to go. ABAQUS, ANSYS, ATENA, TNO DIANA are some of your choices in terms of commercial software. I would prefer ATENA given that ABAQUS is very difficult to handle from the numerical point of view (numerical instabilities when using the smeared crack model for concrete). ATENA has the disadvantage of being slow, so it will not be suitable for very large models.
