I am trying to provide the simplest possible model of an HRES site including the wind and solar branches. I have used a DC generator in the range of a few KVA for simplicity's sake, however, I need to justify it.
There are brushless PMGs employed in wind turbines, but i cannot point you to any particular report or paper. These are normally small scale turbines, but more are coming on stream as there are now strong magnets on the market - Neodymium based magnets are getting cheaper now. Axial field generators are also becoming more popular. For axial field machines, the cogging (resistant to initial turn) is managed by varying the air gap between the magnets on the rotor and the coils in the stator. Two sided rotors are also an advantage, in terms of reducing the cogging problem.
