I am trapping mosquitoes in rural areas with CDC miniature light traps, often times on the weekends, and have been having trouble getting access to dry ice. There are not many suppliers around here, and I cannot guarantee there will be any at the local store when I plan to collect. So, I am wondering what alternatives I can use. According to the literature, there doesn't seem to be any chemical replacement for CO2 as a general mosquito attractant. I have considered using small CO2 cylinders, but I have no idea how long something like that would last or what release rate to use. I thought also about using something like Mosquito Magnet, but they are super expensive (I could only afford to buy one, maybe two), and I imagine they would be difficult to transport and get out to my field sites. If anyone has any ideas for attractants in rural areas, I would greatly appreciate it.
